Drones: Made
Locally, Killing Globally
by Carol Jahnkow & Nancy Mancias
San Diego is home to defense contractors General Atomics Aeronautical
Systems and Northrop Grumman, the world's largest and leading
manufacturers of drones. General Atomics builds the Predator and Reaper
drones. Northrop Grumman provides the software for a similar aircraft,
the Global Hawk spy drone.
These remotely controlled vehicles come with a hefty price tag --
Predator and Reaper's range between $4-$12 million and the Global
Hawk's cost about $35 million. With their high tech sophistication,
drones have become the weapon of choice in fighting the U.S.
occupations. More than 7000 drones are ready to prowl the skies over
Afghanistan and Iraq. The demand for drone surveillance and strikes has
increased through the request of Secretary of Defense Robert Gates for
$112.9 million in the next $708 billion defense bill. Last year, U.S.
tax payers paid $489 million for 24 new Reaper drones and $554 million
for the Global Hawk drones in the 2010 defense bill.
San Diego residents can catch a glimpse of the Predator and Global Hawk
drones at the AeroSpace Museum, but those in Afghanistan and Pakistan
are not likely to have such casual contact. Drones scout over the two
countries launching Hellfire missiles onto intended targets. Since July
2009, there have been 89 drone strikes in Afghanistan. In the first two
weeks of January, six drone strikes took place. The strikes have
escalated under General Stanley McChrystal to prevent civilian
casualties. Though with the latest U.S. and NATO assault in Marja, 16
innocent civilians have been killed; pointing out that U.S. military
intervention in the region is not the way to bring real and sustainable
change. In Pakistan, it may never be known how many civilians have died
as a result of U.S. Predator and Reaper drone strikes, but there are
estimates of hundreds of innocent bystanders who have perished in the
attacks. Pakistani authorities released statistics indicating that in
2009, drone strikes had killed over 700 innocent civilians. January
2010 proved to be a deadly month with 123 innocent civilians killed.
Latest reports, show that 18 missiles by eight drones killed 16
innocent people on February 2nd.
As many U.S. domestic programs suffer, drones and other unmanned aerial
systems have taken a prominent role in the U.S. occupations and defense
budgets with billions continuing to be directed toward research and
development. Even though General Atomics and Northrop Grumman brought
countless technical jobs into the community, San Diego along with many
other cities has had their share of hardships. The civilian
unemployment rate is at 10.1%; there are more than 160,000 San Diegans
unemployed, and employers have lost roughly sixty thousand jobs. The
school district is $87 million dollars in the red with threats of
salary and program cuts. Over 7800 people live on the streets.
According to Veterans Village of San Diego, 30-40% of San Diego
County's homeless are veterans.
San Diego is the number one county recipient of Department of Defense
spending in the nation. The economy is overrun and overspent by defense
contractors such as General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and Northrop
Grumman. Drones in warfare are made for surveillance and strikes, and
contribute nothing to the U.S. economy. Money for non-military related
jobs, education, housing and health care could easily come from the
millions spent per day on the U.S. occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan and
Pakistan.

(Wed., 12/2; we will send out a verification of this after Obama's
announcement)
35,000 new US occupation troops next year
$35 billion more to pay for the war and occupation
We don't yet know the details of the Afghanistan escalation, but these
headlines are the best guess we have now, based on White House leaks.
We are in the deepest economic crisis in over 70 years, with the
highest unemployment rates in living memory, and deep cuts in education
and social services. We should not be forced to tighten our belts to
pay for their imperial adventures.
Do you think things are headed in the wrong direction? We in the San
Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice think so, and we know that many
of you agree with us.
Join us on the day after Obama announces his war escalation plan. We
will gather in front of Congressional Representative Susan Davis'
office to demand that she oppose any funding for the wars and
occupations.

Help Take 500 Trucks of Medical Aid into Gaza
On July 4, 2009 British Member of Parliament George Galloway and US Vietnam War Veteran Ron Kovic intend to lead an American Convoy of 500 Trucks filled with Medical Aid to Gaza. This Viva Palestina Convoy will represent the largest grassroots medical relief effort for Gaza in U.S. history.
The Gaza Strip desperately needs medical aid. Over 1,400 people were killed in the recent Israeli assault and invasion, and thousands more lost limbs or were otherwise maimed by phosphorus bombs and other weapons. Even now, the blockade of even the most basic supplies continues and makes life in Gaza increasingly desperate.
The vision of 500 trucks filled with medical supplies bought with donations from everyday people in America being delivered to people in Gaza is a powerful one. It will speak volumes around the world.
Please Join us to Help Make this American Convoy a Reality!

Stop Blackwater Protest Rally at
Southwestern College Wednesday March 11th, 6:30pm
Put a stop to agreement between SWC and Blackwater
to allow the firm to use on-campus conference rooms for mercenary
recruiting. After the rally, attend Governing Board meeting at 7pm in
Room 214 regarding agenda Item 12: "Reconsideration of Memorandum of
Understanding with Blackwater Lodge and Training Center, Inc." The
college is located at 900 Otay Lakes Road, Chula Vista, CA 91910. Info:
619-820-5321
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
March 3, 2009
Oversight Group "COPs" wants Blackwater Agreement with Southwestern
College Pulled.
Agreement inappropriate in both form and process.
SAN DIEGO, CA (March 3, 2009) The Citizens' Oversight Projects Cte
(COPs) has submitted a four-page letter to the Board of Trustees of the
Southwestern College District regarding the agreement between
Southwestern College District and Blackwater Lodge and Training Center
(recently renamed "Xe, Inc.") which provides that the district can use
Blackwater's shooting range in Otay Mesa in trade for fees for
personnel to operate the range and Blackwater's use of on-campus
conference rooms. COPs wants the agreement revisited and revoked.
The letter detailed 13 points regarding the Memorandum of Understanding
No.4039.09 to support the position that the agreement was not processed
correctly and includes provisions that should never appear in such
agreements. In summary, it asserts that:
The global poor reputation of
Blackwater cannot be ignored. Such an agreement implies that the
District approves of the reputation of Blackwater.
San Diego has already had bitter
experience fighting Blackwater's proposals, and they have been opposed
by the community by a 2:1 margin.
The Otay Mesa facility, where
the shooting range under question is located, was developed without
public review, under various pseudonyms, and using the Federal Courts
to force the City of San Diego to approve occupancy permits.
As a private for-profit
organization, the public has no oversight of their facility nor what
activities occur within it.
The MOU claims there is no cost
to the district, but it also states that Blackwater will be reimbursed
for the use of personnel required to operate the range. This is in
violation of the premise that such MOUs will not obligate the district.
Provides that Blackwater will
have use of on-campus conference rooms to give the impression that they
are part of Southwestern College, and that their programs are approved,
endorsed, sponsored, or even underwritten by the College. How and how
much these conference rooms are used is not limited, apparently
allowing Blackwater to setup a recruiting station for their private
mercenary army on campus.
The MOU includes a "gag-order"
that prevented the District from adequately notifying the public of
this proposal, and all statements must be approved by Blackwater.
The NDA and Waiver (Exhibits A
and B) were not in the agenda packet and are still not available for
review, and the Arbitration clause is of concern.
Law enforcement trainees would
be taken to a facility of a firm that is interested in recruiting their
own private army, mercenaries deployed internationally under the banner
of Greystone Ltd, Xe, Inc. in guns-for-hire scenarios. This is
certainly inappropriate.
No open bidding process was
used. Other mercenary firms may pay more to get on campus to recruit to
these private armies. This agreement does not meet normal government
procurement procedures.
"The agreement with Southwestern College District was formulated to
avoid public scrutiny, and even includes a gag-order to keep Trustees
quiet," COPS coordinator Raymond Lutz said. "We already know of the
character of this company and other private mercenary firms who are now
desperate to establish new funding opportunities. Blackwater presents
this agreement as a gift to the community, but that is far from
reality. They are reimbursed and also gain access to the campus with an
unspoken endorsement for on-campus mercenary recruiting. This agreement
must be revoked."
The letter was also endorsed by a number of organizations, including
Activist San Diego, American Friends Service Committee – San Diego,
Citizens Against Private Armies (CAPA), Peace Resource Center of San
Diego, San Diego Veterans For Peace, and the Stop Blackwater Working
Group of the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice.

STOP BLACKWATER PROTEST/RALLY Tuesday, June 17, 10 a.m.
San Diego Federal Courthouse, 880 Front St. (downtown San Diego/Front and Broadway)
Blackwater abused the City of San Diego's permitting process with a disgusting series of steps shielding their activities from public scrutiny. Then, when their subterfuge was discovered, they circumvented the City by going to a Federal judge--all to gain a foothold in Otay Mesa, for their new training facility at the border.
A Federal court hearing was held on the issue on May 30, 2008, followed by a Temporary Restraining Order issued on June 4, 2008, which forced the City of San Diego to grant Blackwater an occupancy permit for the Otay Mesa facility.
A FOLLOW UP HEARING WILL BE HELD IN SAN DIEGO FEDERAL DISTRICT COURT ON TUESDAY, JUNE 17, AT 10:30AM. WE WILL BE PROTESTING STARTING AT 10AM, 880 Front Street, downtown San Diego (Broadway and Front Street). Bring Signs, etc. (Park in Horton Plaza, free with kiosk validation)

Update on Marcha Migrante III
MARCHA MIGRANTE III, RETURNS HOME, WHAT A JOURNEY, WHAT A RECEPTION, THANKS ALL AS WE COULD NOT HAVE ASKED FOR MORE...SU VOTO ES SU VOZ IS HEARD AND ACTED UPON FROM COAST TO COAST...MUCH MORE WORK AHEAD...
SI SE PUEDE
After 4500 miles, 51 autos, 33 cities, in six states MARCHA MIGRANTE III returns home.
(See full report below, Gracias !!!! Su Voto, es Su Voz!!! ) Record turnouts across USA
MARCHA MIGRANTE III BACK HOME, THOUSANDS WELCOME ON SUNDAY, GRACIAS!
"Thanks to all the wonderful people that came out to welcome us, feed us, house us share their stories and hear our plea, SU VOTO ES SU VOZ !!! Another huge MARCHA MIGRANTE !" states Enrique Morones, organizer/creator of the MARCHA MIGRANTES.
The first MARCHA MIGRANTE (Feb, 2006) helped galvanize people to take to the streets and protest 4437 & ask for humane and comprehensive immigration reform; the second MARCHA (Feb, 2007) gave us the stories on why we need the reform; but this MARCHA MIGRANTE ) Feb 2-17, 2008 is the most important as it gives us the "how to" achieve these goals, VOTE!
SU VOTO, ES SU VOZ was heard from the US/Mexican border...to the Canadian/US border as the international community again came out to support MARCHA MIGRANTE, and then go out and vote in record numbers.
This Sunday February 17th, MARCHA MIGRANTE III returns to San Diego @ 1:00 PM BORDER FIELD STATE PARK, to walk the final mile to the "wall of death, the wall of shame" operation gatekeeper. . where a fence separates to neighboring countries and Elvira Arellano (of the sanctuary movement) will meet the marchers from the Tijuana side (something she was denied by the Canadians on the Canadian border) to welcome home the remaining marchers after a 4500 mile journey, one mile for every know death of the US/Mexican border.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MARCHA MIGRANTE III (Feb 2-17, 2008) San Diego to Canadian Border and back 6 States, multiple cities, and two international borders... Tu voto, es tu voz!!!
Marcha Migrante I (rose up against 4437, no more deaths)
Marcha Migrante II (shared stories on why we need humane immigration reform)
Marcha Migrante III (Tu voto es tu voz. Your vote is your voice)
2/2 Day 1 (3 cities) San Diego, Calexico, Coachella
Thanks to the 200 or so people that came to see us off on the Historic MARCHA MIGRANTE III.
We even had the rejected minutemen of Caltrans fame seeing us off! (great video for CALTRANS TO SEE) Aztec dancers, prayers, Mexico's Human Rights Commission and more that 50 organizations represented in a rousing send off of two dozen autos on our 4,500 mile journey (one mile of every known death on the border)
Our first stop was our traditional stop at the Holtville Cemetery where 600+ of our more than 10,000 brethren that lost their lives since October of 1994 (when Operation Gatekeeper began) are buried. We shared prayer and reflection before having dinner in Calexico...and heading to Coachella to sleep.
2/3 Day 2 (2 cities) Coachella, Los Angeles
Sleep, what sleep? When we arrived in Coachella late at night on Saturday the villagers were there to receive us with the warmth and charm that only a small town can deliver. We went to sleep at midnight then were suddenly awakened (5:00 am) by half the town with "las mananitas", musica de danza, mariachis, flowers, food and even a short skit prepared by the locals in appreciation of our work and MARCHA MIGRANTE III. A wake up call we will remember fondly for the rest of our lives. At 700 a. m. we experienced one of the most beautiful Catholic masses I have ever attended...GRACIAS COACHELLA!
At noon we arrived at Placita Olvera and had a community meeting, then went to Plaza Mexico to spend the night. (National and local media, at every stop...su voto es su voz!)
2/4 Day 3 (3 Cities) Los Angeles, La Paz, 40 acres
We headed to LA PAZ, to see the eternal resting place of our leader Cesar Chavez... Paul Chavez, his son, met us there and gave a moving story of his dad...and how important "MARCHA MIGRANTES I, II & III" have been. When we left LA, the roads were closed due to snow, but just as we approached LA PAZ, a miracle, the roads opened before our eyes...Paul and all at LA PAZ are surprised we made it...SI SE PUEDE.. KEEP THE FAITH
We then proceed to 40 acres where "el Movimiento" started...Where Cesar and Dolores started the farm worker movement decades ago. Some of the very "campesinos" they worked shoulder to shoulder with share their stories... education... priceless!!! We spend the night @ 40 acres.
2/5 Day 4 (2 cities) 40 acres, San Jose
We headed to San Jose for Super Tuesday "record turnouts of Latinos and youth turn out to vote" !!! We hold a prayer vigil in the evening @ Pueblo Mexico...SU VOTO ES SU VOZ...let's pray so that whoever is elected will give us the reform that millions of us have marched for. We witnessed crosses in the sky, yes we have pictures. Mitt Romney withdraws from race!!! The power of prayer.
2/6 Day 5 (3 cities) San Jose, Sacramento, Redding
We headed to our State's Capitol where we met with the offices of the Latino Caucus chair Joe Coto and Senator Gil Cedillo, to publically thank their assistance in assuring that hate groups, like to Minutemen are not allowed to adopt freeways. We then hold a press conference on the Capitol's steps. SU VOTO ES SU VOZ... (We don't adopt freeways, we own them...!) We then hit the road again...
2/7 Day 6 (2 cities) Redding, Medford: Oregon
Across the border to Oregon, beautiful mountain landscapes, we saw Shasta, we arrive in Oregon...another heartwarming welcome THANKS YOU MEDFORD. We have a wonderful community meeting with native drumming, dialogue, several press interviews, we continue to make the national news. Great organizing in Medford, a great sample of what is yet to come.
2/8 Day 7 (2 cities) Medford, Eugene
Eugene, maybe the true "America's Finest City"...we are welcomed at the city's human rights office...pozole, great company, press conference then we head to the University of Oregon to meet with MECHA and later a Native American lodge for food and community meeting. The true spirit of community...as locals take us in to their homes for lodging and fellowship...I spend the night with the Kitty...hold on now...she is the Mayor of Eugene and her husband, were great hosts... theme continues SU VOTO ES SU VOZ...Primaries in Oregon, Texas and several other states are yet to come...
2/9 Day 8 ( 2 cities) Eugene, Woodburn
Still in Oregon, we start @ Cesar Chavez elementary for a community meeting on voting, drivers licenses, and human rights. In afternoon we head the city with the highest percentage of Latinos in the state, Woodburn. Very active and great organizing... we hear from the leadership of Woodburn and then do live and taped radio segments on the stations owned by PCUN. Impressive!
We will sleep in a church tonight more to come soon...buenas noches!!

As the wildfires that ravaged southern California are gradually brought under control, speculation grows over what could have been done to reduce the damage.
Locally, officials have focused on the need for modernized and coordinated disaster-response efforts, while again questioning the prudence of building houses in areas prone to fire.
On a national level, however, the discussion is much broader. Within political circles, the California wildfires have yet again thrust the debate over the Iraq war into the spotlight, this time by calling into question how America uses its National Guard.
San Diegan Bill McDannell began his Walk to End the Wars in November, 2006.
On August 18, 2007, after three thousand one hundred and eighty-five miles, accompanied by his wife who drove the support van,
BILL REACHED HIS GOAL OF WALKING FROM
LAKESIDE TO WASHINGTON, D.C.
My name is Bill McDannell. I am a father of five and grandfather of four. I am a Vietnam era veteran and a former pastor of the United Methodist Church. Despite considerable evidence to the contrary, I still firmly believe that, as a citizen of the United States of America, I have a voice in the activities of our country, and that my voice can be heard and can have an impact.
Beginning on Saturday, November 4th, 2006 I am going to put that belief to the test. Mindful of my constitutional right to petition my government, on that date I will leave my home in Lakeside, California to begin a walk that will end in Washington, D.C. I will be carrying with me a petition I intend to present to both the executive and legislative branches of our government requesting that we, as a nation, declare an immediate end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I am doing this as an individual citizen - with the help and support of my loving wife - and not as a member of any group, organization or political party. I am doing it as a grandfather, in the belief that if the grandfathers and grandmothers of our nation do not raise our voices, we will one day see our grandchildren being sent off to a seemingly endless war.
That said, I welcome any and all individuals, groups and organizations who believe it is time to end these wars to meet me along the way and sign my petition, to walk with me for a while, and to demonstrate our conviction that it is time to take definitive action to end these wars. I am doing this on faith, hoping that those who feel as I do will be inspired to lend their assistance to my effort. But whether or not such assistance comes, I am committing my time, my energy, my health, and my fortunes to this effort. God willing, I shall arrive in Washington and I shall present my petition to our country’s leaders.
I am calling my effort Walk To End The Wars, and my website will be the place where you will be able to find a regular journal of my walk detailing my experiences along the way, a progress report that will allow you to locate me and join me on the walk or sign my petition if you desire, and methods of contacting me directly should you wish to lend support to my effort. I deeply appreciate your support in whatever form you wish to offer it, and wish you and the generations that will follow you Peace.

UFP&J STATEMENT ON IRAN
United for Peace & Justice statement on the current Iran situation
NO WAR ON IRAN!
NO NUKES!
TELL CONGRESS AND THE
UN SECURITY COUNCIL:
DON'T ATTACK IRAN!
United for Peace and Justice opposes any military action against Iran, as well as covert action and sanctions. We reject the doctrine of "preventive war." All diplomatic solutions must be pursued.
President Bush has refused to rule out a U.S. nuclear attack on Iran if Iran doesn't halt its uranium enrichment activities, declaring on April 18th: "All options are on the table."
United for Peace and Justice calls upon the U.S. Congress and the United Nations Security Council to oppose military action against Iran, uphold the law, support diplomatic solutions to the crisis, and put an end to U.S. nuclear hypocrisy. We urge you to add your signature to two letters:
TELL CONGRESS: Oppose any attack on Iran or covert military actions there.
TELL THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL: Don't cave into Washington on Iran.
With the majority of the people in this country now opposing the war in Iraq, it's almost inconceivable that the Bush Administration could be planning to launch another illegal, immoral war.
But as Seymour Hersh revealed in the April 17th New Yorker, "While publicly advocating diplomacy in order to stop Iran from pursuing a nuclear weapon, [the Bush Administration] has increased clandestine activities inside Iran and intensified planning for a possible major air attack. Current and former American military and intelligence officials said that Air Force planning groups are drawing up lists of targets, and teams of American combat troops have been ordered into Iran, under cover, to collect targeting data and to establish contact with anti-government ethnic-minority groups." Even more alarming, Hersh wrote that "American Naval tactical aircraft, operating from carriers in the Arabian Sea, have been flying simulated nuclear-weapons delivery missions.... since last summer," and the Bush administration is giving serious consideration to the use of nuclear weapons.
The Washington Post independently reported that Pentagon planners are "contemplating tactical nuclear devices" to take out deeply buried underground targets in Iran.
On April 28, the United Nations Security Council will be called upon to consider a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency evaluating Iran's nuclear program. The IAEA is unequivocal that there is no evidence that Iran has diverted nuclear materials to weapons.
Yet escalating rhetoric from Washington continues to threaten sanctions and other "painful consequences" against Iran. Retired Air Force Colonel Sam Gardiner, reiterating that a military operation has already begun inside Iran, told Amy Goodman, "It's a very serious question about the constitutional framework under which we are now conducting military operations in Iran."
Make your voice heard. Add your signature to these two letters today . And, if you haven't already done so, sign AfterDowningStreet's petition to President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

March and Rally
March 15, 2008, 12 noon Fairmount and University, City Heights, San Diego
Five years ago, the US military was preparing the imminent invasion of Iraq. After five years, the war and occupation continue, with the deaths of close to 4,000 US troops and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. An estimated four million Iraqis are internal or external refugees. The direct costs of the war approach $500 billion, and the total estimated costs are over $2 trillion. Thousands of veterans come home wounded and are unable to get decent care. At home, adequate healthcare is only a dream for millions. And as we enter into an economic recession with rising unemployment and home foreclosures, Bush has proposed the largest military budget since the Second World War.
March 15-22 will be a worldwide week of protests against the Iraq war and occupation. In Washington DC, Iraq Veterans against the War (IVAW) will be holding Winter Soldier hearings, where Iraq and Afghan vets will testify to what is really happening on the ground in those countries.
In San Diego, the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice (SDCPJ), along with other organizations (listed below), is calling for a march and rally on March 15, starting at 12 noon, at Fairmont and University, in City Heights.
Regardless of who is elected in November, if there is no visible protest on the streets, this awful war and occupation will drag on endlessly. We need all the help that we can get, in order to make this event a success. Here are some things that you can do:
Endorse the event. If you are a member of a trade union, social, political, or other organization, get your organization to endorse the event and participate actively. Send your endorsements to aka0001@hotmail.com, sdpeaceguy@gmail.com, or activist@cox.net.
Stay informed. Updated information about the march and rally is available on the SDCPJ website.
Spread the word. Pass along information about the march and rally to friends, co-workers, and fellow students. Forward this email. Post it on MySpace and Facebook. Flyers (both color and grayscale) can be downloaded from the SDCPJ website. Reprint the flyers, hand them out, or leave them in locations where people can pick them up, like coffee houses or worksite mailstops.
Help us organize. We will be meeting every Monday night at 7 pm from now until March 15 at the Church of the Brethren, 3850 Westgate Place, San Diego.
Be there on March 15. Bring your own signs and banners. Large visible protests help spread the word that most of us oppose the war. We want the troops out now.

Join San Diego's Observance of Int'l Day of Action to Shut Down Guantánamo
Friday, January 11th NOON - 1pm In front of the San Diego Federal Bldg and Courthouse 880 Front Street (near Broadway)
This will be a simple vigil in solidarity with organizations and individuals across the world to observe the "International Day of Action to Shut Down Guantanamo" -- spearheaded by Witness Against Torture, Amnesty International and National Religious Campaign Against Torture with a permitted demonstration on the National Mall in Washington DC. (See following for additional info on the national and international activities.)
In San Diego, we will echo the plan in DC with a simple vigil around a core of "prisoners" dressed in orange jumpsuits and black hoods (and maybe blacked-out goggles and earphones, ala Jose Padilla). We will have signs emphasizing the Shut Down Guantanamo theme, including No on Torture and Yes to Habeas Corpus/Rule of Law. At a minimum , we will stretch along the Front Street public sidewalk in front of the Federal Building and Courthouse (near Broadway).
We're doing this during the Noon lunch hour for maximum visibility to pedestrians and passersby downtown.
SO -- wear Orange and bring whatever visibility tools YOU have to reinforce our message on this day (signs, banners, T-Shirts ...) and JOIN US for as little/as much time as you can THIS FRIDAY (Jan. 11th) between Noon and 1p -- on the sidewalk in front of the Federal Building and Courthouse (near Broadway).
The most important thing is that YOU COME and stand witness with us. If you don't have any "props", we'll have something for you at the Vigil.
If you need to travel downtown to do so -- take the Trolley if possible and get off at the Civic Center Station (Orange and Blue Lines) on C Street near 2nd Avenue and head west and south 2 blocks; OR park at Horton Plaza where you can get parking validated at self-serve kiosks (enter garage from 4th Av. just south of Broadway) and head just a few blocks west. Carpooling always a good idea!
If you have an orange prisoner suit and/or black hood that you will wear or lend to this event, please Let Us Know:

PEACE Candlelight Vigil & Demonstration
Please join the San Diego Coalition for Peace & Justice, Activist San Diego and others for an Iraq Moratorium Event: Candlelight procession/vigil and peace caroling! Friday, December 21 in Chula Vista from 5 - 7 pm--our two destinations are:
1. Gather 5 p.m. in front of the RECRUITING OFFICE at 627c H Street, north side of the street, just west of the corner of H and Broadway (.03 mi from Trolley Station) for caroling and candlelight vigil.
2. At 5:30 p.m. we will then walk in candlelight procession up H Street past Broadway to the corner of 5th and Broadway (Entrance to the Chula Vista Shopping Mall) where we will vigil and "shop for peace". There will be a press conference and we will carol, vigil, and hand out informational leaflets. People are encouraged to peace shop in the mall as well, carrying shopping bags with peace messages writ large: e.g. "Celebrate the Prince of Peace, End the WAR", "Paz, Por favor", "Bring the Troops Home for the Holidays!", "Peace on Earth includes Iraq....the Middle East/Iran/Israel/Palestine", Thou Shall NOT KILL", "Good Will Towards Men"...more ideas below...
Getting there: Because traffic will be very heavy with the afternoon commute, please carpool and park at the H St. trolley station on Bay Blvd. by H St. (Frwy. 5 S, exit H St.) or ride the trolley (check out www.sdmts.com for trolley schedule) to the H St. stop; walk east a long block to the recruitment center, 627c H Street just west of the corner of H St. and Broadway.
What to bring: candles/holders/lighters [we will provide many also]; your homemade shopping bag with large print peace messages
Giant puppet/s will attend as well and other puppet paraphernalia.
This is a good opportunity to reach out to a large community, including a large Latina and spanish-speaking constituency, where we have not had much presence. Please bring yourselves and your friends.

The slow motion train wreck that is the
occupation of Iraq grows more nightmarish by the
day. In 2006 the American people voted to bring
it to an end. But the political process is moving
glacially at best. We must force the media and
the politicians to recognize just how angry and
how massive anti-war sentiment in this country
has grown. It's time for the Iraq
Moratorium.
The Iraq Moratorium will be an escalating,
monthly series of actions demanding an end to end
the war. Commencing Friday, September 21st and
continuing the Third Friday of every month
thereafter, we will make a break with business as
usual.
If you think the Iraq Moratorium is a good
idea - if you want to help build it and make it
grow - please make a generous donation. This is a
bottom up movement. There are no fat cats, no
corporate underwriters, no big foundation
grants!

Dear Members of the San Diego Peace and Justice Community,
After much discussion and with very heavy hearts, the planning group for this Saturday's March and Rally has decided that the event must be postponed due to the firestorm catastrophe unfolding in our county.
We discussed links we see with shortages of local resources, the outcomes they've had on our fire crisis and the enormity of the devastation of Iraq. We debated whether the larger community would be open to this message. We decided, finally, that now was not the time for such a public discussion but rather a time for coming together in support of those most impacted by the fire's destruction.
With this in mind, we would like to urge each and every person who planned to come to the demonstration this Saturday to volunteer and/or contribute to relief efforts - especially for those who find themselves outside of the traditional safety net. Suggestions include helping the Border Angels and the Displaced Farm Worker Drive. Please find details below.
We will seek to re-schedule the demonstration for the near future and appreciate your understanding.
We encourage people to attend the demonstration in Los Angeles in solidarity of the National call date this Saturday: Saturday, October 27, 12 noon
Gather Olympic & Broadway, Los Angeles OCTOBER 27TH RALLY IN LOS ANGELES
Again, thank you for your understanding,

Displaced Farmworker Aid
Dear Farmworker CARE Coalition and Allies;
The National Latino Research Center is collecting items for Evacuees
and Displaced Farmworker and immigrant families in the Pala/Pauma
Valley, Rice Canyon, Rincon and Fallbrook communities.
As members and allies of the Farmworker CARE Coalition we ask that you
join our efforts to ensure that nobody impacted by this disaster falls
through rescue relief safety nets. We plan on immediately
coordinating collection of clothes, food, and bedding for affected
families, as well as aid in efforts to secure housing for families who
have had their homes destroyed. Farmworker Families
affected most likely won't receive aid that other insured San Diego
residents do, so it is up to us to provide support as they begin
recover from this horrific tragedy.
We just heard word from the Pala Mission that a trailer park near
Harrah's casino has burned down, leaving over 30 trailers displaced.
Each trailer housed multiple families. Two Lideres Comunitarios from
Poder Popular were impacted. In Rice Canyon, three Poder Popular
lideres comunitarios have lost their trailers and we have not heard
from them since Monday. Families on the reservations began to be
evacuated this morning. Lideres Comunitarios from the Fallbrook area
were evacuated through Camp Pendleton and relocated to Oceanside and Carlsbad.
We will be in touch when we have more information about exact needs
and how this effort will be coordinated. In the meantime, please
begin to activate your networks. As the university is closed this
week I will be communicating and coordinating from home, please call
me (Konane) on my cell phone if you have any questions. 868-603-3632

Blackwater USA plans to build a training

The environmental impacts will be enormous and have
long-lasting effects, including loss of sensitive

water table, groundwater pollution and more.
People living in Potrero will also be exposed to noise,
traffic and disruption of their quiet way of life.
Blackwater is one of the most powerful and secretive

"global war on terror."
Destroying communities for profit at the expense of the

"Blackwater's contractors fired
their weapons 195 times -- or an average of 1.4

Blackwater reports that its forces fired

has proposed an 824-acre military-style

Proposed location borders on the Cleveland
National Forest, and is a sensitive habitat for
eagles and other wildlife, and is an important

FAST
WEDNESDAY NIGHT 9:00PM TO
MIDNIGHT!
Dear
Friends:
(This message will repeat in Spanish)
On the fourth anniversary of the invasion of
Iraq and the death of my son Jesœs
Alberto, I will begin a fast in front of the
San Diego Federal building on March 27 at
midnight. The fast will last two days to
symbolize the two hours that it took before my
son received medical aid as a U.S. Marine
slowly bleeding to death after he stepped on an
illegal U.S.-made cluster bomb. I cannot bleed
for two hours but I can fast for two days in
order to protest the deaths of our young
soldiers and marines as well as those of
innocent Iraqi children. I also fast to oppose
the sending of more U.S. troops.
I invite you to join this small
demonstration of our disgust with Bush's
criminal war. You are all welcome to accompany
me for however much time you can spare so that
I am not alone. If you cannot join me, do
whatever you can to show your disapproval of
the war.

Thanks to all of you who support peace.
P.S. We are accepting donations of water or

A second US aircraft carrier arrived in
the Sea of Oman off the southern coast of
Iran giving a whole new meaning to the term
"escalation." The Bush administration is
hell-bent on sending up to 48,000 more troops
to Iraq against the wishes of most Americans,
but now it seems like they might not stop
there.
While the war in Iraq grows worse by the
day, the White House seems to be turning its
sights toward neighboring Iran which could
escalate the current conflict into a regional
one. This reckless move comes despite the
fact that most experts believe diplomacy is
the way to go with Iran.
President Bush is out of control, and
Congress needs to step in immediately to rein
him in. Please sign this petition to Congress
asking that they require the president seek
their authorization before taking military
action in Iran. Clicking here will add your

$93-Billion Supplemental Appropriations
Request
On or about March 14,
2007 a vote will be taken in the House of
Representatives on whether to grant the Bush
Administration the $93-billion they've
requested to supplement the $70-billion already
in the pipeline for Iraq in 2007.
Congressional approval
for this supplemental will enable Bush to
expand the war and continue the
killing.

DE-FUND THE WAR AND OCCUPATION
FUND THE SAFE WITHDRAWL OF OUR TROOPS!
A "NO" vote on the Supplemental Appropriation
Bill is a vote to end the war. De-funding is
the best way to protect our troops
– not ammo, armor, and
surges. There is already sufficient funding in
the 2007 war budget to bring the troops safely
home ($70-billion currently is in the
pipeline).
Note: If you are unable to attend then send
the message by making a phone call on Tuesday
March 13th. Make your voice heard against
funding the war and occupation in Iraq.

You can jail the resisters, but you
can't jail the resistance. George W. Bush, take
notice as U.S. Army Lt. Ehren Watada is
court-martialed next week. Congress, take heed.
Young people in harm's way are leading the way

was the first commissioned officer to refuse
deployment to Iraq. He joined the military in

DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
AND
CESAR CHAVEZ
On January 11th, 2002, twenty hooded and
shackled men shuffled off a plane from
Afghanistan, arriving at the U.S. prison at
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In an attempt to sidestep
the Geneva Convention protections for prisoners
of war, the Bush administration created a new
category of "enemy combatant" for these men
captured in the "war on terror." Since that
time, more than one thousand men and boys have
been imprisoned at Guantanamo.
Accounts of cruel, inhuman, and degrading
treatment have been condemned by the United
Nations, Human Rights Watch and other reputable
bodies. The prisoners have resorted to hunger
strikes as a way of protesting their treatment,
and many have attempted suicide; three men
killed themselves on June 10, 2006. Fear and
desperation mark their confinement.
Five years later, not a single prisoner has
been charged, tried or convicted of any crime.
January 11th, 2007 marks five years of unjust
imprisonment, isolation, beatings,
interrogation and abuse. We say: no more. We
must say: no longer. There will be a
demonstration in Washington, DC, vigils and
demos in many cities and a delegation to
Guantanamo
January 11, 2007 is a day of national shame.
But we can also make it as a day of citizen
action!
In San Diego, join us for bannering at First
and Cedar, San Diego, 3:30-5:30 p.m. (Look for
us on the east side of First, a little north of
Cedar; look for parking on 2nd and surrounding

Geneva Conventions, etc.

This International Day of Action is being
organized by Witness Against Torture, and
co-sponsored by Peace Action and many other
peace and justice organizations. Specifically,
the January 11 actions will call on the United
States government to:
Repeal the Military Commissions Act and
restore Habeas Corpus.
Charge and try or release all
detainees.
Withhold funds for the proposed $125
million construction of new military courts
at Guantanamo.
Clearly and unequivocally forbid torture
and all other forms of cruel, inhuman, and
degrading treatment, by the military, the
CIA, prison guards, civilian contractors, or
anyone else.
Pay reparations to current and former
detainees and their families for violations
of their human rights.
Shut down Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, Bagram
and all other U.S. prisons overseas,
including secret CIA detention
facilities.

campaigns to shut it down, please see:

The Declaration of Peace
is a nationwide campaign to establish by
September 21, 2006 a concrete and rapid plan
for peace in Iraq, including:
a prompt timetable for withdrawal of
troops and closure of bases
a peace process for security,
reconstruction, and reconciliation
and the shift of funding for war to
meeting human needs.
People across the United States are signing The
Declaration of Peace pledge, a commitment to
take action if this plan for peace is not
created and activated by Congress by September
21, the International Day of Peace. From
September 21-28, just days before Congress
adjourns for the fall elections, Declaration
signers will withdraw their consent from this
war, and support a comprehensive peace process,
by taking part in nonviolent action, marches,
rallies, demonstrations, interfaith services,

common purpose of healing,
reconciliation and peace, in response
to the worsened violence in the
Middle East. Adding to sectarian
divisions created by the Iraq war,
the recent Israel/Lebanon
conflagration has only worsened
divisions among peoples related to
their religions affiliations. The
8/30 service is aimed at showing the
common purpose among all faith
centers in San Diego, particularly
all the "children of Abraham" (the
Jewish, Muslim and Christian faiths),
in denying war and conflict; and
embracing healing, reconciliation,
dialog, and peace.

The War Machine
Revealed:
Bechtel Corporation - Merchant of
Death
From Hiroshima & Nagasaki to
Yucca Mountain to the Middle East,
Bechtel has reaped human,
environmental and community
devastation. Besides being the
world's largest engineering firm and
#1 nuclear profiteer, Bechtel is a
leading beneficiary of the Iraq war
and corporate globalization policies.
Bechtel "connects the dots" for the
anti-nuke, anti-war and global
justice movements!
Through its sordid corporate
history and 100 years of
revolving-door relationships with
government, Bechtel illustrates the
connections between profiteering and
war, between nuclear power and
nuclear weapons proliferation,
between "free trade" and the
exploitation of indigenous peoples,
and between corporate power-brokers
and decision-makers at the highest
levels of government.
Gather at the Federal Building,
Front and Broadway, 11:30 a.m. We
will proceed through the downtown
area and arrive at Bechtel's office
at 1230 Columbia at 12:15 p.m.

January 10th, 2003, INS
Special Registration Vigil-
A coalition of 21 local
organizations initiated by the
American Arab
Anti-Discrimination Committee
(ADC) and joined by the San
Diego Coalition for Peace and
Justice, sponsored an all-day
vigil at the INS offices at the
Federal Building in downtown
San Diego. The vigil called for
an end to the registration
program, demanded fair
treatment for those who did
register, and monitored INS
actions during the day. Efforts
by the
anti-registration/detention
coalition seemed to be
effective, as INS treatment of
registrants was far less
draconian than on December 16,
the deadline for the previous
registration group. The vigil
began at 7:00 AM and continued
throughout the day. By 4:30 PM,
the crowd had grown to about
100. During a brief rally,
George Khoury of ADC, Lilia
Velasquez, a leading
immigration attorney, Ben Prado
of the Raza Rights Coalition,
and Larry Christian of SDCPJ
addressed the crowd.
January 6th, 2003,
Deployment Protests - A
small handful of coalition
members went down to the
entrance to the 32nd Street
pier to protest "the largest
deployment of troops since the
gulf war". The navy ship
deployment in SD coincided with
a deployment in Baltimore, and
massive troop movements. The
small event was covered by Fox
6 news, NPR, USA Today,
Noticias 17, KUSI, and Channel
8. Only Fox 6 broadcast their
piece.
December 14th, 2002, La

Tijuana and San Diego came
together on either side of the
border fence to celebrate
Christmas with friendship,
candles and song, and to
commemorate those who have died
trying to cross the border.

Drown Out Bush's
Lies!

Downtown San Diego
In large cities and
small towns all across
the country, citizens
will rally one hour
before Bush's address
as we make our
determination to
“Drive Out the
Bush Regime”, the
political message of
the day.
At 6:00 PM, just as
Bush starts to speak,
everywhere we will
BRING THE NOISE. In a
cacophony of sound, we
will drown out his
address with music:
from drums to violins,
from hip hop and
classical; and with
noise: banging pots and
ringing church bells,
sound car horns and
lifting our voices.
We will begin to
rally at 4:30 PM at the
Horton Plaza fountain
at 4th & Broadway,
downtown San Diego.
The Mission of The
World Can't Wait is
organizing people
living in the United
States to take
responsibility to stop
the whole disastrous
course led by the Bush
administration. We seek
to create a political
situation where the
Bush administration's
program is repudiated,
where Bush himself is
driven from office, and
where the whole
direction he has been
taking U.S. society is
reversed.
We seek to mobilize
millions to express
their outrage, to speak
the truth, to act with
urgency and form an
organized political
resistance. We welcome
any individuals and
groups who agree that
the Bush Regime should
be driven out, whatever
their political party
affiliation or lack
thereof. We reach out
to people who have been
fooled by Bush, and to
those who have been
most seriously affected
by the outrages
inflicted by the Bush
Regime. We drew our
inspiration from...
NOT IN
OUR NAME which
we encourage you to
read, add your name
to, and distribute
broadly.
Excerpts: “No
election, whether fair
or fraudulent, can
legitimize criminal
wars on foreign
countries, torture, the
wholesale violation of
human rights, and the
end of science and
reason.”
"It is our
responsibility to stop
the Bush regime from
carrying out this
disastrous course. We
believe history will
judge us sharply should
we fail to act
decisively."

SEPT. 25 PEACE
VIGIL FOR KATRINA,
9/11, IRAQ WAR
VICTIMS
PEACE VIGIL
San Diego´s peace
community with faith
center connections will
come together for a short
gathering and candlelight
vigil, on Sunday, Sept.
25, at 7:00 pm at Balboa
Park on Sixth Avenue at
Nutmeg Street. According
to spokesperson Craig
Jones, the commemoration
will be ecumenical and
non-sectarian, and will
mourn the deaths on
9-11-2001; deaths in the
on-going war in Iraq; and
those killed in the
aftermath of Hurricane
Katrina.
"It´s been four
years since the 9/11
attacks killed some 3000
innocent people. Since
then, our
government´s war
policies have killed
hundreds of thousands who
had nothing to do with
the attacks, and
there’s
no end in sight. It is
now also clear that
government delay and
incompetence caused
needless deaths in the
aftermath of hurricane
Katrina, in opposition to
supposed national
preparedness after 2001.
We want to show that all
of these victims belong
in our conscience, and in
the conscience of the
nation," he said. Jones
added that Iraq "must
continue to be in our
minds. Even though
overwhelming evidence
shows that Iraq had no
connection with the 9-11
attacks, President Bush
has used those attacks to
gain support for his war
policy, and to divert
precious resources from
legitimate local safety
and preparedness. Even
now Bush uses the specter
of the "war on terror" to
attempt to justify the
unjustifiable war, and to
further reduce needed
domestic safety."
The commemoration is
sponsored by Communities
of Conscience, and the
San Diego Coalition for
Peace and Justice.
This commemoration is one
of several events in San
Diego during the month of
September which focus on
the war and the on-going
occupation of Iraq. This
vigil is San Diego´s
second day of weekend
activities coinciding
with the Washingon, D.C.
rally on this same
weekend. Picking up on
the theme made prominent
by Cindy Sheehan during
her encampment in
Crawford, Texas, Jones
said, "There is no noble
purpose and no reason in
killing innocent people
around the world, after
innocent people were
killed here. There is no
noble purpose, but
instead real harm to our
nation in the diversion
of money and manpower
away from real needs, to
the quagmire of Iraq. But
there is nobility,
responsibility and
patriotism in demanding
that this tragic death
stop. There is a wide
range of ways to make
that demand,
commemorative vigils,
marches and rallies. We
hope that everyone will
find the forum and venue
that is appropriate for
them, and will lend their
voices to the growing
call."

From the UFPJ web
site:
More than two years after
the illegal and immoral
U.S. invasion of Iraq,
the nightmare continues.
A majority of Americans
believe that this war
never should have
happened, but our elected
representatives in
Washington continue to
rubber-stamp the Bush
Administration's
disastrous policies. It's
time to hold all pro-war
politicians accountable
for the deaths, the
destruction, the lies,

To mark the grim
milestone of 1,000 U.S.
military men and women
killed in the Iraq war,
United for Peace and
other organizations have
called for candlelight
vigils. So far nearly
1,000 have been scheduled
across the country. San
Diegans are gathering at
the following places, all
at 8:00 p.m.:
Foot of Newport
Avenue in Ocean Beach -
Take I-8 all the way
west to Sunset Cliffs
Blvd., to Newport Ave.
Go west 3 blocks to the
beach.
3rd Avenue Park,

& Thorne, San
Diego
Please see the
United for Peace
article for further
information, including
vigils in other areas of
the country.
From the UFPJ website:
"Our vigils will be
simple and dignified.
We'll gather at 8:00
P.M., and stand in a
circle, silently, for 45
minutes or so, holding
candles -- safely away
from anything that could
catch fire.
"Together, we'll
acknowledge the sacrifice
made by the 1,000 brave
American men and women
who have given their
lives in Iraq. It is a
time to silently honor
our fallen soldiers, and
to reflect on the
situation in Iraq where
114,000 American troops
are now serving, and the
events and decisions that
led to them being
stationed there.
"This is not a rally.
Although we may be moved
emotionally by our shared
reflection and
acknowledgement, this is
not the place for
speeches or
announcements.
"These ground rules
are important. We ask
that you only attend the
event if you agree to
abide by them."

May
1st is fast approaching.
While the rest of the
world celebrates Labor
Day, Americans have
Bush's notorious
"Mission
Accomplished" stunt
to look back on. On May
1, 2003, the President
ordered a San Diego-bound
aircraft carrier held
just off the coast until
he could arrive in a
fighter plane to announce
the "end to significant
fighting in Iraq". It was
the height of hubris --
and one year later, Bush
and his administration
seem no wiser.
Recent weeks have seen
a dramatic escalation in
death and destruction
more than one year after
the beginning of the
U.S.-led war.
Increasingly oppressive
occupation tactics have
led to escalating
displays of violence on
both sides. Fighting has
spread in cities
throughout Iraq,
overwhelming already
strapped hospitals. The
U.S.-led coalition has
fired rockets and
deployed 500-pound bombs
on civilian populations.
By April 13th, local
clinics reported more
than
600 Iraqi civilian
deaths in Fallujah
alone; 40 died in a
single attack on a
mosque. U.S. casualties
are also mounting. In the
first 22 days in April,
105 U.S. service members
lost their lives.
This is double the number
from all of March and
more than any month so
far. San Diego has been
hit hard: more than
100 local service members
have died in Iraq so
far.
In response to the
deteriorating situation
in Iraq, there has been a
call for Emergency
Protests this weekend. In
San Diego county, four
events are planned (at
the moment)....We urge
you to take part in as
many as you can. This
goal is to be as visible
EVERYWHERE as we can.

NATIONAL
CALL-IN
Protest the warrantless
wiretapping
Sponsored by the
National Lawyers Guild
From
Guild President Michael
Avery:
Dear Friends,
It's time to register our
outrage that the
President broke the law
by permitting the
wiretapping of Americans
without warrants!
On Wednesday, May 17,
join the Bill of Rights
Defense Committee in a
National Call-in to let
your members of Congress
know that it is their job
to hold the President
accountable. We need to
tell Congress to protect
us from unreasonable
searches and seizures and
find out how many
Americans are being
wiretapped, in violation
of the law. (Visit our
resources page for more
information about
warrantless
wiretapping.)
Mark your calendar, and
tell your friends. We
will send you more
information, including
talking points, by May
15. To ensure this
effort's success, the
BORDC has teamed up with
other organizations
including the ACLU and
People For the American
Way, each of which will
take responsibility for a
day the week of May
15.
Help us by calling
Congress and saying,
"Investigate, don't
legislate."
On Wednesday, May 17,
call the Capitol
switchboard,
202-224-3121, and ask the
operator to connect you
(24 hours a day) or call
your legislators directly
(find their Washington
office phone numbers at
www.visi.com/juan/congress).
Tell Congress that we
want to know how many
Americans have had
their phone calls or
emails eavesdropped on
by the NSA without any
check. No more
secrecy. No more
law-breaking. We want
to know, and we want
to know now.
Thanks for all you
do!

Your
government is now gearing
up for an attack on Iran,
with covert operations
already underway, plans
being drawn up that
include the use of
nuclear weapons, and a
campaign of lies pumped
out by government
officials that we heard 3
years ago.

of 6th and University

during rush hour with
this new poster and
others. Join us-email

President Bush
has refused to rule out a

With the majority of the
people in this country
now opposing the war in

inconceivable that the
Bush Administration could
be planning to launch
another illegal, immoral
war

have a ocean of white
T-shirts with our
political demands from
east coast to west coast,
at the street, work
place, school, bus

and our voice will be
LOUD AND CLEAR AND CANNOT
BE SILENT FOR EVER!
We will settle for
nothing less than full
amnesty and dignity for
the millions of
undocumented workers
presently in the U.S. We
believe that increased
enforcement is a step in
the wrong direction and
will only serve to
facilitate more tragedies
along the Mexican-U.S.
border in terms of deaths
and family
separation.
Immigrants contribute 7
billion in social
security per year. they
earn 240 billion, report
90 billion, and only are
reimbursed 5 billion,
"where are the 85
billion?" They also
contribute to the U.S.
economy 25 billion more
than they receive in
healthcare, etc., etc.,
etc.
According to the
anti-immigrant
politicians and
hate-mongers, "immigrants
are a drain on society."
If this is true, then on
May 1st the stock market
will surge, and the
economy will boom. If
not, we prove them wrong
